Tabor Carmelite Community, Nsukka

Tabor Priory was originally planned by the Discalced Carmelite General Council to serve as a Postulancy house for Nigeria and a Noviciate for English-speaking African countries. In 1993 it was handed over to the care of the Anglo-Irish Province. Tabor also offers facilities for retreats. The Horeb and St Joseph's buildings together have accommodation for twenty four retreatants. The community offers a programme of retreats as well as facilities for individuals. Presently, Tabor Priory Nsukka is our main Retreat Centre.

It functions also as our Noviciate in Nigeria. The Community Chapel is under the patronage of Jesus Transfigured. At present, there are fourteen Friars in the Community – three conventual Friars: Chrysogonus Okorie (Prior), Daniel Ehigie (Novice Director), Moses Aburime, Anthony Ogwu, and eleven Novices.

The community also has a prison ministry which includes chaplaincy to the local prison and a CAPIO office in the priory grounds. As the priory is near the local university, students often join the community for Eucharist and prayer.
The priory has extensive grounds which the community has beautifully landscaped over the years. The community has also developed a pig and chicken farm and grows its own vegetables.

The Regional cemetery is located at Nsukka. Four young Nigerian friars, all of whom died in tragic circumstances, lie there: Br Michael Owolabi, Fr Jude Ogbu, Br Stephen Isunuoya and Fr. Richard Aor.
